How to Apply Allover Decorative Coating Step-by-Step (With Pro Tips)

Applying decorative finishes often feels overwhelming - too many layers, too many tools, and too many things that can go wrong. Allover was developed to change that. It’s a simplified system for creating beautiful, high-performance surfaces across walls, ceilings, floors, and even wet areas like showers.

If you're a hands-on DIYer or a professional looking for a faster way to apply finishes to your interiors, we’ve got good news for you. Allover simplifies the process without compromising quality. It's a trowel-applied decorative coating system that's ready to use and works on nearly every interior surface, from tiles to cement plaster.

Here’s how to apply it in five straightforward steps:

Step 1: Surface Assessment and Cleaning

Start by ensuring your substrate is stable, clean, and dry. Allover adheres well to most common surfaces, including ceramic tile, cement plaster, and plasterboard. Just make sure there’s no dust, grease, or crumbling material.

Pro tip: You don’t need to rip out old tiles. Just clean and lightly sand for extra grip.

Step 2: Apply Allover Base

Using a stainless-steel trowel, apply the first coat of Allover Base. This product acts as both a bonding agent and a textural foundation. Let it dry thoroughly before applying the second coat.

You can control how much texture or smoothness you want at this stage by adjusting your pressure and angle. Apply thin, even layers and smooth as you go.

Drying time tip: Ensure good ventilation to speed up drying between coats. Typically, 4–6 hours is ideal depending on the environment.

Step 3: Smooth with Allover Finish (Optional)

If your goal is a soft, refined, or more minimalist aesthetic, this is where Allover Finish comes in. Apply it over the dry base layer using a stainless-steel spatula or trowel.

This layer creates a smoother surface and softens the textured look of the base, making it more suitable for sleek kitchens, modern bathrooms, or minimal design schemes.

Pro tip: For a more industrial or raw feel, you can skip this layer and let the base coat's texture shine.

Step 4: Seal with Allover Top

Protection matters. After your base and optional finish layers are dry, apply two coats of Allover Top. This transparent, semi-matte topcoat seals in the color and texture while adding serious resistance to water, stains, and impact.

Use a roller, brush, or spray to apply. Let each layer dry fully before adding the next.

Note: Allover Top is what makes this system suitable for high-moisture areas like kitchens and showers. Don’t skip it.

Step 5: Final Buff and Inspection

Once everything is dry, inspect your surface. If desired, lightly buff to even out the surface or leave it as-is for a raw, matte finish. The result is a seamless, stone-like surface with character and durability.

Additional Application Tips

  • Temperature & Humidity: Apply Allover in environments between 10°C and 30°C. High humidity may increase drying time.

  • Coverage Estimates: On average, 0.6–0.8 kg/m² per coat for Allover Base, and about 0.3–0.4 kg/m² for Allover Finish.

  • Tools: Always use clean stainless-steel trowels or spatulas to prevent contamination or uneven finish.

  • Maintenance: After curing, surfaces coated with Allover require only gentle cleaning with neutral detergents. Avoid harsh chemicals to preserve the integrity of the finish.

Where Can You Apply Allover?

  • Bathrooms: Floor-to-ceiling seamless showers and water-resistant walls.

  • Kitchens: Splashbacks, counters, and continuous wall treatments.

  • Living Areas: Floors and feature walls that demand visual impact.

  • Commercial Interiors: Lobbies, shops, and office spaces needing both function and style.

The versatility of Allover makes it ideal for creating continuity across rooms and surfaces. Whether you're working with old tile, fresh cement, or drywall, Allover helps you build modern, monolithic spaces without the need for separate systems.
